BECOME A VALUED DONOR TO THE SYDNEY GAY & LESBIAN CHOIR CULTURAL FUND

Established in 1991, Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir is a non-auditioned choir which welcomes members regardless of their sexual identity or musical experience. Participation in the Choir gives people an opportunity to express their sexuality and musicality in a safe and inclusive environment while the Choir’s public performances convey a powerful message of respect and understanding of LGBTI people amongst Sydney’s wider community.

Why are we collecting funds?

The revenue we raise from membership fees and concert ticket sales covers our basic running and production costs, and the salary of our professional Music Director.

The SGLC Cultural Fund was established to provide an additional resource for the Choir to undertake special projects which help raise the artistic standard of the Choir, broaden the range of experiences we offer our members and audience, and expand our engagement with the community.

We contribute to this fund through activities such as raffles and applications for project-specific government grants. However, it is the generosity of private donors which really makes our hearts sing!

How will the funds be used?

  1. to purchase sheet music and copyright fees for new repertoire

  2. to commission new works by local composers

  3. to produce CD and video recordings of our performances

  4. to undertake performances outside Sydney, across Australia and the world

  5. to engage professional artists to work with the Choir

  6. many other valuable activities which we could otherwise not afford.

about_us_20170414.html

For 25 years, the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir has been an inclusive voice of the LGBTIQ community and a symbol of diversity. The choir is a non-profit community group that welcomes all LGBTIQ and straight friends to join us regardless of their musical experience. We entertain our audiences with shows from Broadway musical to contemporary classical music.

In February 2016, we lost our friend, accompanist and Life Member, Gareth Chan. Despite the position of SGLC accompanist being a paid one, when Gareth took on the role in 2005, he did so as a volunteer. For twelve years, Gareth accompanied us, giving his time and efforts freely to the choir.

We are incredibly fortunate now to have made a new appointment to the position, Antonio Fernandez, whose talents we are glad to recognise with a professional fee.

While we work towards amending our annual budget to ensure the maintenance of the accompanist position into the future, to keep the choir from financial difficuties, we set up the Accompanist Fund with the expectation to raise funds for two years. The immediate response and generosity have surprised us. Our supporters have put the Choir in a sound financial position. We decide that it is the right time to close the Accompanist Fund.

To all our supporters, we would like to say a heartfelt “thank you” for helping us through a difficult time. Your support has allow us to stay focused on what we do: giving great performances, making a positive impact on the whole community, and showing what a dedicated and inclusive LGBTIQ community can achieve.
